Sam Owen is the dynamic leader at the helm of The Skills Academy. With an industry career spanning over 15 years in the welding, fabricating, and technical skills sectors, Sam brings a wealth of hands-on experience and strategic vision to this state-of-the-art training facility.

Sam's journey began at Neath Port Talbot College, where he laid the groundwork for his technical expertise by earning his NVQ Level 2 and Level 3 in Welding and Fabrication. His talent quickly became evident during his apprenticeship with Doosan Babcock, where he achieved second place in the World Skills event and was named Apprentice of the Year. Sam’s career then took him across the UK, contributing to high-profile projects in various energy sectors, including petrochemical, coal, gas, and nuclear power stations.

At JES Group Ltd, Sam has honed his skills further, transitioning from a welder to a supervisor, and eventually to Operations and Training Manager. His role involved overseeing large teams, managing client relations, and securing key contracts with industry giants such as Dwr Cymru and BOC. Sam’s foresight and leadership were instrumental in establishing The Skills Academy, positioning it as a cornerstone for the development of a highly skilled workforce ready to meet the demands of the renewable energy industry.

Sam's dedication extends beyond his professional achievements. He is an active member of his community, serving as a committee member at Baglan RFC and managing a successful property business. His commitment to continuous learning and development is evident as he continues to pursue further qualifications, including ILM Level 4/5.

Sam Owen is ‘the man with the plan’; a visionary leader whose extensive experience and strategic insights have established The Skills Academy as an exciting and pivotal project for the future of technical skills training in South Wales.
